Nether Earth — по мнению многих первая[1][2] игра в жанре стратегии в реальном времени. Была выпущена для компьютеров Amstrad CPC, ZX Spectrum и Commodore 64 в 1987 году в Великобритании компанией Argus Press Software Ltd.

Сюжет

Земле угрожает инопланетная раса Инсигнианцев. Люди захватывают один из их заводов по производству огромных боевых роботов.

Игровой процесс

Игрок управляет неуязвимой (но невооруженной) летающей машиной, которая может летать над любой частью игрового поля. Игрок строит роботов и дает им приказы: атаковать инсигнианских роботов, охранять определенную территорию или захватывать нейтральные или вражеские фабрики, чтобы увеличить собственное производство и таким образом улучшить свое военное положение. Конечная цель состоит в том, чтобы захватить или уничтожить все вражеские базы и таким образом выиграть сражение. Все происходит в реальном времени и действие развивается постоянно, а не по шагам. Так как обзор игрового поля игроком ограничен тем местом, где расположена летающая машина, большая часть битв на передовой ведется машинами самостоятельно, в то время как сам игрок концентрируется на постройке и отдаче приказов новым роботам. Игровая графика нарисована в изометрической проекции.

Ремейк

В 2004 году был сделан кроссплатформенный римейк игры Nether Earth с использованием трехмерной графики OpenGL. Отчасти идея игры используется в планетарных боях в игре Космические рейнджеры 2: Доминаторы.
